One would imagine that under the sea, it is difficult to form a pile, especially when armed only with flappy things on their sides and dorsal, perforated necks and a mournful (yet uplifting) song.
Whales have got around this by using a combination of genius and more genius.
It is a whale known (sic) fact that Whales are an endangered species, due to fishermen using the wrong kind of bait and also a little known feud with penguins that has spanned generations and frequently claims Whale victims.
Whale's are working around this, attempting to negotiate peace talks with the penguins, and exploiting the litter that blights many of our oceans.
As you can clearly see from this picture that I drew, Whales will use umbrellas to gather their piles of krill (a Whales favourite breakfast). Often a Whale finds large schools of krill on their fishing trips and have a big eat and then move along leaving the krill behind, this means later on (lunchtime) if they are hungry, they will probably die.
It's a sad and sorry fate.
By piling krill in their umbrellas for later, they avoid this fate.
Here you can see Bobby the whale doing just this.
WARNING:
Although the more umbrellas there are in the ocean, the more chance there is that Whales like Bobby will survive. I do not recommend you just throw your brollies into the sea. One needs to launch their unwanted parasol into the correct part of the ocean, taking into account migratory patterns and areas where there is a high density of krill.
